Composite Fillings

Occlusal decay occurs on the biting surface of the tooth. A dental drill is used to remove the decay. The drill leaves a smooth surface. Too smooth in fact for the composite material to adhere to it so the area is etched with a mild acid solution which when washed away leaves the smooth surface rougher.

A composite material used for the filling is pressed down into the prepared area and then pushed out to fill all the creaves of the tooth. Afterwards the material is hardened using a dental curing light. This process is repeated as many times as needed to build up the layers until the filling is complete. Finally the filling is smoothed and polished using a polishing tool.
